SCBA LEX Testing Services
General Distributing is an authorized reseller for SCBA Life Extension Testing (LEX)
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Life Extension Testing (LEX) is a DOT‑approved cylinder requalification process that evaluates the structural integrity and safety of eligible composite (fiber‑wrapped) SCBA cylinders beyond their original 15‑year service life.
Conducted under DOT Special Permit 16320 (RIN i406), the LEX process utilizes advanced inspection and testing methods to determine whether a cylinder can safely remain in service for an additional 15 years, extending the total allowable service life to up to 30 years from the original date of manufacture.
SCBA LEX testing is not a repair or modification—it is a rigorous, standardized requalification process specifically designed for critical life‑safety breathing air cylinders.
Cylinders that successfully pass LEX testing are recertified, permanently labeled, and fully documented in compliance with all applicable DOT regulations.
What the SCBA LEX Process Includes
Each SCBA cylinder undergoing life extension is subjected to a comprehensive, proprietary evaluation process that includes:
- Internal and external cleaning
- Detailed visual inspection
- Modal Acoustic Emission (MAE) testing
- Liner conditioning
- Permanent labeling and documentation per DOT requirements, and meets all applicable regulatory and safety standards.
If a cylinder fails the initial visual inspection, it is removed from the process and there is no charge for LEX testing.
