Cylinder Testing
DOT-Certified Cylinder and Hydrostatic Testing Services for Safety and Compliance
Ensuring the integrity and compliance of your compressed gas cylinders is critical for safety, regulatory adherence, and operational efficiency.
With on-site DOT-certified facilities and ASTM Level-II certified technicians, General Distributing Company offers comprehensive, state-of-the-art cylinder inspection, testing, and re-qualification services. We ensure the safety of your personnel and equipment by utilizing the industry's most trusted and advanced methods to meet all regulatory requirements, including DOT 49 CFR.
We specialize in both high-pressure and non-destructive testing methods to provide a complete picture of your industrial, medical, and specialty gas cylinder's condition and for cylinder recertification.

Cylinder Inspection, Recertification, & Reconditioning Services
Comprehensive Visual Inspection
This process includes in-depth visual examinations of both the cylinder's interior and exterior, checking for damage, corrosion, or defects per 49 CFR requirements. Our trained technicians remove the valve, insert a high-intensity light probe, and examine all internal surfaces.
Advanced Ultrasonic Cylinder Testing (UE)
We utilize the latest Hexagon Digital Wave UE17 Ultrasonic Testing (UE) machine for a non-destructive, cutting-edge approach.
This allows for a precise, interior inspection of your cylinders without the need to remove the valve, preventing moisture and contaminants from entering the cylinder. Additionally, it measures wall thickness to ensure the container can withstand pressure without collapsing, ultimately maintaining the structural integrity of the cylinder.
Hydrostatic Cylinder Testing (High-Pressure Compliance Test)
Hydrostatic testing (or "hydrotesting") is the required industry standard for re-certifying compressed and packaged gas cylinders. This method is the definitive test for confirming the cylinder's safe operation under pressure.
Our technicians operate a Galiso Hydrostatic Tester to perform a precise water pressure test that subjects the container to a pressure far exceeding its normal operating level. This confirms the cylinder's pressure-holding ability and structural integrity. If a cylinder is structurally weak due to defects, this controlled test will cause it to permanently fail, ensuring the dangerous cylinder is safely removed from service before it can cause harm.
Cylinder Reconditioning (Blasting, Cleaning, & Painting)
For cylinders that are structurally sound but cosmetically worn from use, we provide a state-of-the-art blasting and painting operation to extend their service life and improve asset tracking.
- Blasting & Cleaning: Our machines remove rust, scale, and old paint, providing a clean surface. This process also allows our test department one last chance to closely inspect the cylinder exterior for any accidental damage or structural flaws.
- Painting: We apply a tough, new coat of paint that protects the asset from the elements and extends its overall useful life.
Compliance, Tracking, & Documentation
Our DOT-certified facility is licensed, certified, and monitored by the U.S. Department of Transportation. We take the paperwork burden off your shoulders by creating, collecting, maintaining, and storing all test records pertaining to each cylinder, ensuring your agency or business remains fully DOT 49 CFR compliant. We manage the entire cylinder tracking process.

Cylinders We Test & Safety Testing Frequency
We are equipped to test a wide range of compressed gas cylinders used across various industries, including:
- HP Steel Cylinders
- Aluminum Cylinders
- Small Medical Cylinders
- CO2 Cylinders
- Acetylene
- Propane
- Various Special Permit Cylinders
- SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus)
Safety Note: Cylinders should not be used if they have exceeded their valid service life or re-test dates. Any cylinder that shows evidence of exposure to high heat or flame must be immediately removed from service and visually inspected and hydrostatically tested prior to any refilling.
